When my wife and I first moved to Springfield it was the middle of the summer. Our next door neighbors told us about the wonderful Old Capitol Farmer’s Market and it’s been a Saturday staple for us ever since. We love waking up bright and early and starting our day picking out flowers, fresh vegetables, and usually ending up at Cafe Moxo for a Cheddar Together sandwich.
This last week we were on a mission at the market in downtown Springfield. We started the morning with a smoothie from Genius Mango Smoothies, which is a food truck converted in this super cool vintage trailer. This was a first for us and certainly not our last time. We loved it! We had a friend with an allergy with us, and they took the time to deep clean everything before making his smoothie. Can’t speak highly enough of them.
Next up on our list was getting a bouquet of flowers for our niece after her first dance recital. The coolest 4 year old, deserves the coolest flowers. We stopped by Mueller Family Farms for these. Their staff was so patient and helpful as we picked out flowers to make a bouquet. They held the flowers and made sure we loved them. When we finally decided on our picks, they trimmed, prepped, and wrapped them for us (and our niece loved them).
Strawberry-rhubarb pie is a favorite in our house. We stopped by Harvest and Blooms from Rochester, Illinois to grab some rhubarb. They had folders of recipes they give out for each of the veggies and herbs they have available at the market which came in handy for making pie.
The Saturday market is more than just plants and good food. They also have artisans and crafters alike. We always make sure to stop by Cloth + Oak to see what kind of cool new stuff they are carrying. Their cup designs are always so cool, and make for great gifts.
There are so many vendors at the Old Capitol Farmer’s Market. You are sure to find one with whatever you are after. We love getting to go to the Saturday market in Downtown Springfield. I love that it lasts late Spring through Fall because of the variety you get visiting. If you are in Springfield on a Saturday morning, make sure you make it a stop on your list. It’s a fun, family friendly, dog-filled place to spend your morning. Don’t miss out this weekend!
